Beyond the archive, Junior Gaultier continues to inspire a network of stylists, collectors and enthusiasts. This page highlights a small selection of individuals interpreting the label in their own way.

This website started as a record of my vintage Junior Gaultier clothes, but thanks to the amazing people I’ve met, all sharing a love of Jean Paul Gaultier’s work, I’ve decided to introduce some of them to you!

Riccardo Slavik

“By 1989, I was a regular at Gaultier’s boutique in Via Della Spiga, in the luxury ‘quadrilatero’ area of Milano. I wasn’t in any way a good customer; I went there regularly to browse and rarely had the funds to buy.

I bought several pieces in the leopard print, the leggings are gone, as are most of the rest, except for the trucker jacket and the jeans.”

“I have wanted these boots since I first saw them on the runway. I never saw them in NYC, and for years and years, I kept looking for them and hoping that someday they would appear at a resale shop or on eBay.

I had to wait until the pandemic (for someone that was my shoe size!) to clear their closet, and they were in such fantastic shape that I felt they were meant to come my way.”

“Gaultier made me feel that was the way I should look; I never felt like it wore me.

One of the nicest compliments I remember back then was a guy who worked in a store in San Francisco who said, ‘I like the way you wear your Gaultier, it’s so relaxed.’ I loved the colours that Gaultier chose as well.”

“One of the things I liked about Gaultier’s ads, for both the main line and Junior line, was that they were extremely strong images, telling a very strong story.

I have one of the Gaultier adverts from Spring/Summer 1989 in an edition of Vogue US, where you can see how the images have been cut and pasted onto a white piece of paper and photographed again. The images are blown up so much that you can’t see a pore in the model’s face, as the photos were rephotographed so many times. And the colours were completely distorted, which I thought was genius.”
