Jean Paul Gaultier in the late 1980s and early 1990s — a personal archive

About this archive
This website is a focused archive exploring the Junior Gaultier clothing line between 1988 and 1994, focusing on collections, individual garments, and the ideas that connect them. It brings together runway references, design details, fashion reports of the time, and cultural context to build a clearer picture of a pre-internet period, drawing on a range of analogue sources. To provide more background to the Junior Gaultier line, earlier mainline collections are also referenced, along with the years following the label’s end.
As I find new pieces, I add the most relevant ones to the archive, growing it and adding depth to recurring themes — how silhouettes evolve, how references are reworked, and how Gaultier moves between tradition, subculture, and fashion.
The project is written and curated by a long-standing admirer of Gaultier’s work, with a particular interest in how clothing can cross boundaries — between decades, identities, genders, and different ways of dressing. I’m not an expert; I just love the clothes, focusing on what feels most interesting, and writing from my own interpretations.
